As part of our artist study on Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night painting this week I have created a subitising game as part of our Continuous provision for maths. There are 4 base boards with numbered stars, one in the correct order the rest in random order. There are then 4 sets of circle cards using star circles inspired by Vincent’s stars in his painting. There are 4 different subitising arrangements to add challenge. Alternatively you could use the circle star cards as the base boards and cut the star number cards to match. You could even cut all the cards and use as a snap matching game. PS apologies for the poor quality photo of the star cards they are clear and sharp in the PDF. The yellow circles with blue dots are stars in the style of van Gogh’s swirly stars.

Can you help Santa and the elves to pack the sleigh? There are two sets of ten sleighs showing numbers 1-10 and another set showing numbers on a ten frame to support children who need support to recognise numerals. You can use cubes and loose parts as the presents to match amounts to the sleigh. You can print the sleighs on A4 or two to a page as A5 size for your tuff tray.

Two ladybird mats to laminate for children to draw the equal amount of dots to create doubles. Bright and cheerful design used with ladybird doubles from Yellow Door which I hid amongst some leaves for children to find so they could match first should they wish. I printed them both as A3 and A4. The A3 allowed the children to use concrete materials to make the double dots with loose parts and the A4 were used to draw dots into the laminated sheet with a dry wipe pen. A versatile maths activity to consolidate and teach number order 1-5 and counting sets. There are 2 themed activities; build rockets with cubes or count aliens onto planets. There are 5 boards for each theme with a numeral missing from the sequence for the children to match a numeral card to (also in the pack), practising number order and recognition. I use alien counters which I bought from Amazon but there are alien character cards in the pack or you could use loose parts or create your own alien peg dolls to count with. I am using these to help teach the maths learning for Week 12 of the Maths Mastery scheme.

A number activity inspired by the fabulous story Aliens Love Underpants! Choose an alien number card and a pair of spotty pants then count out buttons or pompoms to match the amount. There is a set of pants with 10 spot spaces to look at number bonds or you can use the plain pants to just count out sets of loose part spots to match their chosen alien’s number. This number activity supports number recognition 1-10 and counting sets accurately. It also supports fine motor skills. There is also a mark making sheet with line designs for the children to create patterns for their designer pants!

Our children love using loose parts so this activity as been a hit for CP. We have been practising our subitising and exploring the numbers 1-6 and their part, part, whole/ number bonds. There are Christmas tree boards with a numbered star to show how many decorations to add. There is an adapted version to support children to recognise the numerals with a set of snowflakes to reinforce the amount to add. There are a set of subitising cards, two of each number to match to the tree too.

Maths activity to promote counting and number bonds using the principle of part/part/whole. I used dog biscuits to act as concrete resources to partition the numbers on the dogs collars. I explained to the children that the dogs could only eat the number of biscuits shown on their collars each day. Too many they would get a tummy ache and too few they would be hungry. The first bowl was for it’s breakfast and the second for it’s dinner. This seemed to really help them organise their ideas and show various ways to make the number. The pack includes a part/part/whole mat which I copied 4 times and several dogs with number collars to print, laminate and cut out. We used bone shaped dog biscuits to use as counters which the children enjoyed playing with and surprisingly none were nibbled by the children! (As seen in my Instagram account).

This is part of my enhanced CP around the theme of Jack & the Beanstalk. Practice counting amounts 1-12 using these number cards. Place in muffin trays or pots for children to then add the correct number of ‘magic beans’.

A prompt to support an estimating and counting activity based around the story Jack & the Beanstalk. The children take a grab of beans and estimate how many they think they have with a quick look - using their subitising skills. They then place them onto the 10 frame (have a spare just in case there’s more). You can then discuss more/ fewer and the difference between their estimate and the actual amount.
